Effect and Importance:

This property is important to dynamic seals where harder elastomers have better ability to resist abrasion, wear, and surface scraping. For static seals, higher hardness helps avoid seal extrusion. It is also to be noted that:

• Seal hardness is directly proportional to the Modulus of elasticity.
• Seal leakage is directly proportional to seal hardness.
• Seal friction is inversely proportional to seal hardness.
